The famous Moscow museum is home to one of the world's largest collections of Russian fine art. Wondering how not to miss the main masterpieces and not to get confused in the various ‘Tretyakov’ buildings? Don’t worry, here's your handy guide!
Main building
Lavrushinsky Lane, 10

- What’s inside? It houses a permanent exhibition consisting of icons and Old Russian art, as well as classical Russian paintings, sculptures and graphics of the 18th – early 20th centuries. ‘Boyarina Morozova’ by Vasily Surikov, ‘Girl with Peaches’ by Valentin Serov, ‘Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan’ by Ilya Repin, ‘The Rooks Have Returned’ by Alexei Savrasov and just a few of the hundreds of masterpieces on display.
- How to get there? It’s a 5-minute walk from the ‘Tretyakovskaya’ (yellow/orange line) metro station.
- How much does a ticket cost? A general admission ticket for adults costs 700 rubles (approx. $8.30). You can also buy it online at tretyakovgallery.ru.
- The main building has audio guides available in Russian, English, German, French, Italian, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and Korean. They can also be purchased online when buying a ticket or directly in the gallery at the Audio Guide counter.
- The Engineering Building adjoining the main building on the left, meanwhile, hosts temporary exhibitions, film screenings, concerts and conferences.
- The Tretyakov Gallery also has a house church called the Museum Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachy. It displays icons from the museum's collection. The oldest one is the 12th century ‘Our Lady of Vladimir’.

- What’s inside? The permanent exhibition in this building is devoted to the art of the 20th and 21st centuries, from avant-garde and socialist realism to nonconformism and contemporary Russian art. You’ll find Kazimir Malevich's ‘Black Square’, paintings by Kandinsky and Chagall, works by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Ilya Kabakov and Eric Bulatov and other masterpieces.
There are also large halls for temporary exhibitions, with huge advertising banners hanging on the building’s facade. - How to get there? It’s about a 10-minute walk from ‘Oktyabrskaya’ (orange/brown lines) or ‘Park Kultury’ (red/brown lines) metro stations (And about a 30-minute walk from the main building of the Tretyakov Gallery).
- How much does a ticket cost? A general admission ticket for adults costs 600 rubles (approx. $7.30). You can also buy it online at tretyakovgallery.ru.

Building on Kadashovskaya Embankment

- What’s inside? The brand new building, designed by architect Sergey Choban, opened in 2024. Its facades feature reproductions of famous works by Russian artists from the gallery collection, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside, there are large and modern halls for temporary exhibitions, a café, a souvenir store, and halls for movie screenings.
- How to get there? It’s about a 15-minute walk from ‘Novokuznetskaya’ (green line), ‘Tretyakovskaya’ (yellow/orange line) or ‘Polyanka’ (grey line) metro stations.
- How much does a ticket cost? A full ticket for all the exhibitions costs 1,500 rubles (approx. $18). However, you can also choose a specific exhibition and pay separately for it. Tickets range from 600 to 900 rubles (approx. $7.00-11.00).
Artists’ museums within the structure of the Tretyakov Gallery
- Pavel & Sergei Tretyakov Museum. This memorial museum is located in the house where the founding brothers of the Tretyakov Gallery were born (1st Golutvinsky Lane, 16, bld. 1) and is dedicated to their life and work. Tickets cost 400 rubles (approx. $4.75).

- Victor Vasnetsov Museum. Located in a house built in the Neo-Russian style according to the artist's own design (13 Vasnetsov Lane), This museum exhibits paintings, graphic works and arts and crafts by Vasnetsov and other artists. Tickets cost 400 rubles (approx. $4.75).

- Apollinary Vasnetsov Museum. This memorial apartment museum is located in the house where the artist lived for 30 years (Furmanny Lane, 6, 3rd floor, apartments 21-22). His studio and personal belongings, as well as many paintings and sketches are housed there. A ticket costs 350 rubles (approx. $4.10).

Branches of the Tretyakov Gallery in other Russian cities
- Vladivostok
In 2023, The Tretyakov Gallery opened a branch for residents of the other side of the continent. It is located in the historic building of the Far Eastern Shipping Company (Aleutskaya Street, 15). Today, cultural and educational events and educational programs are held there.

- Samara
In 2024, in the city on the banks of the Volga River, the gallery occupied a unique constructivist factory-kitchen building, which was built in the shape of a sickle and hammer (Novo-Sadovaya Street, 149), to open a new branch. The main masterpieces from the main collection of the Moscow museum are regularly brought for temporary exhibitions. Tickets cost 250 rubles (approx. $3.00).

- Kaliningrad
In late April, 2025, another branch of the gallery will open in the westernmost region of the country. A new building with an area of 17,500 square meters (Paradnaya Embankment, 3) has been specifically built for the Tretyakov Gallery. The first exhibition will be called ‘Five Centuries of Russian Art’ and roughly 300 masterpieces from the main collection will be moved there.
