‘Patchenny’, ‘tseoo’, ‘frigan’: 281 new words have been added to the dictionary of the Institute of the Russian Language in 2025
‘Akademos’, the official dictionary of the Vinogradov Institute of the Russian Language, has existed since 2016. It is replenished with those words that scientists consider necessary to record orthographically. Now, it has more than 200,000 units – words, as well as proper names.
Since the beginning of 2025, 281 words have been added to it. Among them are simple ones, like the expression “где ни попадя” ("wherever") or the name of a region – ‘Эвенкия’ (‘Evenkia’). But, there are also tricky ones. For example, “дети-инофоны” ("deti-inofony") appeared in the dictionary – this is what they call those children who communicate in their native language in everyday life and Russian is not their native language.
The dictionary now also has new abbreviations, such as ‘шефналадка’ or ‘shefnaladka’ (i.e., work on setting up, testing and preparing equipment for an operation) and “цеу” or ‘tseoo’ (“valuable instructions”). ‘Akademos’ also includes ‘фиджитал-спорт’ or “phygital sport” (which refers to competitions with both online and physical formats), ‘фриган’ or “frigan’ (a person who rejects the principles of consumer society and lives off the grid). And also ‘патченный’ (‘patchenny’), which means ‘fixed’ or ‘patched up’.
There is also the affectionate ‘океюшки’ (‘okeyushki’), which should be self-explanatory, okay?
