There are more than 190 ethnicities in the multinational state!

According to official data of the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), there are 146.15 million people living in Russia as of January 2024. 

The majority, almost 70%, inhabit the European part of Russia. The largest number of people, as expected, live in Moscow: The population of the capital is more than 13 million people. And, if we count Moscow Region, as well, the number rises to 21.8 million. 

In fact, Moscow is one of the largest urban agglomerations in the world. The smallest population, meanwhile, is in Chukotka, where just 48,000 people live.

Russia officially is a multinational state, with more than 190 ethnicities living in it. Russians take first place, with an overall population of 105.5 million, followed by Tatars (4.7 million), Chechens (1.67 mln), Bashkirs (1.57 mln), Chuvashs (1.06 mln) and others.

There are a couple of ethnic groups whose numbers are extremely small. For example, in Leningrad Region, there are representatives of the Vod people (99 people), while, in Chukotka, there are the Kereks (23 people).
