Founded in 1288, Svensky Monastery is one of the oldest in Russia. The monastery was ravaged by Lithuanians and Crimean Tatars, while the Bolsheviks closed it altogether, destroying many ancient buildings in the process. At one time, the monastery served as a branch of the regional museum of local history and was only returned to the Orthodox Church in 1992.
