LESSON 12: SOFT & HARD CONSONANTS

Most Russian consonants can be hard or soft. The opposition between hard and soft consonants can be seen in English, too. For example, the ‘n’ sound is hard in ‘not’ and soft in ‘new’. Similarly, the ‘b‘ sound - in ‘boot’ and ‘beautiful’, the ‘p’ sound - in ‘poor’ and ‘pure’.

Consonants are hard before the vowels а, у, о, э, ы and soft before the vowels е, и, я, ю, ё.

Hard-indicating vowels and soft-indicating vowels make five pairs. а - я, у - ю, о - ё, э - е, ы - и.

Listen to the audio and compare syllables with hard and soft indicating vowels, noting how different they sound.

NOTE! In some words with foreign origin, ‘е’ is pronounced like ‘э’. For example,

бренд, термос, сленг, латте, селфи
